Cancer treatment in a warzone: Ukraine oncology centre team share humbling insights

In this fascinating interview, Moroz Vycheslav and Yurchishyna Svitlana tell Global Coalition for Radiotherapy’s Darien Laird how the Khmelnytski Oncology Centre rallied to provide cancer treatment in a warzone.

Moroz Vycheslav, director of the centre, said: “These six months from the start of the war are difficult to compare to normal peace times. 

“But this time of war gave us the chance to mobilise our collective potential.” 

This resilient team stepped forward in the terrible circumstances and:

  • Continued treatment 
  • Added additional care for patients 
  • Installed new radiotherapy equipment
  • Switched to a humanitarian focus
On 15 September 2022 GCR’s Director of Communications, Darien Laird, interviewed Moroz Vycheslav, Director of the Oncology Center and abdominal surgeon at the Khmelnytskyi Regional Oncology Center, along with Yurchishyna Svitlana, Head of Radiotherapy Department, to get a glimpse of how the war has affected their day to day cancer care.
